Let’s see what Benito Mussolini has to say about Fascism:
Everything I have said and done in these last years is relativism by intuition. If relativism signifies contempt for fixed categories and those who claim to be the bearers of objective immortal truth … then there is nothing more relativistic than Fascist attitudes and activity… From the fact that all ideologies are of equal value, that all ideologies are mere fictions, the modern relativist infers that everybody has the right to create for himself his own ideology and to attempt to enforce it with all the energy of which he is capable.
Does that sound like “We make our own reality” or more recently, “We don’t want fact checkers telling us what to say.” Here is Benito’s analysis of Freedom:
The Truth Apparent, apparent to everyone’s eyes how are not blinded by dogmatism, is that men are perhaps weary of Liberty. They have a surfeit of it. Liberty is no longer the virgin, chaste and severe, to be fought for … we have buried the putrid corpse of liberty … the Italian people are a race of sheep.
This sounds very much like the Neo-Conservative manifesto, just replace “Italian people” with “American people.”
Then we come to that extremely successful propagandist that so many politicians today are using as a model for their own political campaigns, Joseph Geobbels:
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.
This idea of the big lie is rampant in Republican politics but it comes with its own counter jab: you can’t identify a big lie and invoke the godfather of the big lie without having the other side accuse you of playing the Nazi card. Bullshit! If someone is lying they should be called out on it over and over again. To paraphrase Goebbels, the truth is the greatest enemy of the Republican party (and they’re not too happy with people actually casting votes either).
Ever wonder why the rest of the world is very nervous about the United States? They envy our freedom? Hardly …
