If you watch the Fox News discussion of yoga in America, you might take away two different views. The first is that yoga is not a sport. The argument goes that sports teach life-skills like bouncing a ball, getting knocked on your ass, etc. and they must involve competition, other players, and keeping score. I agree and I’m sure the international sport committees used these qualifications to approve synchronized swimming for the Olympics. The second is that although yoga is admittedly beneficial, it doesn’t stand up to a concussion when considered as an educational life-experience.
I actually think that the discussion misses a valuable requirement of sports in America today: at the highest levels it should be highly profitable. Therefore, at the lower school levels sports function as free training for the corporate plutocrats who will further extend their wealth by wearing out the bodies and minds of young athletes and turning top performers into the aristocracy of the land.
It is amusing that yoga, which can lead to a balanced, happy, and healthy life, is considered a danger to the masculinity (grrrr) but peddling Mormonism in the south of France and avoiding military service is considered good enough for the White House.
