This has been reprinted in several venues but I picked it up at The Daily Kos.
Yes, it’s really true.
The 10th grade science teacher is being investigated by the Professional Standards Commission of his school, for uttering the word vagina during a biology lesson. Some parents are upset at this teacher for using a word straight out of the approved textbook, and are seeking to have him investigated. Under what actual grounds they might have a case is not at all clear however.
The students are already even given the option to opt out of the horror of having to hear a term that designates a female organ.
Tim McDaniel, who teaches 10th grade science at Dietrich School, told the Twin Falls Times-News that four parents were upset when they learned that his lesson included the word “vagina” and information about the biology behind female orgasm.
“I teach straight out of the textbook, I don’t include anything that the textbook doesn’t mention,” McDaniel remarked. “But I give every student the option not attend this class when I teach on the reproductive system if they don’t feel comfortable with the material.”
Maybe he should have just distributed the pocket guide to euphemisms for vagina?
These people must not own TV’s, because all one need do to hear the word spoken is turn it on and watch any sitcom that plays at 8:00 PM. [Although Va-Jay-Jay is common on shows that can’t bring themselves to say “vagina”]
The teacher has taken the course straight out of the textbook, yet somehow this has been brought to the Professional Standards Commission. Well, it seems the real agenda of these parents is coming to light.
According to students who have set up a Facebook page to “SAVE THE SCIENCE TEACHER!!” certain parents may have had a political agenda in going after McDaniel. Sixty-six percent of church goers in Lincoln County, where Dietrich is located, are affiliated with the Mormon LDS Church, according to 2002 Glenmary Research Center data.
“[T]here are a couple people in the community that are trying to get Mr. McDaniel fired for teaching the reproductive system, climate change, and several other science subjects,” students wrote. “All these subjects were taught from the book and in good taste. He cares for each of his students and goes the extra mile to help them all. Now is the time for us to help by supporting him!”
Teaching science in science class! We can’t have that now can we? Stories like this remind me how lucky we were to dodge the Romney bullet last November.
My question though is, if these kids don’t learn the word vagina, how will they know they’re supposed to get their mandatory ultrasound exam when they think they might be pregnant?
