Penrod is a young scamp living in the midwest just before World War I. Booth Tarkington actually wrote three books about the episodic adventures of Penrod. I think reading the first title is sufficient.
Penrod Scofield is an alternate version of Tom Sawyer without the dialect. In fact, although the time frames are off, you might confuse the activities of Penrod with the antics of the Little Rascals. There’s even a version of Petey to follow the eponymous hero around.
In general I would accept that Penrod was a decent light read. I do think that Booth Tarkington is not a terribly exciting author. Perhaps The Magnificent Ambersons will change my mind.
