Dutchman

Remembering Shirley Knight: In the 1960s there were a dozen films that made such an impact on me that I often think of them after over fifty years. This is one.

You may be more familiar with the doting grandmother Shirley Knight from more recent films such as As Good As It Gets or even Paul Blart: Mall Cop, but back in the sixties she was a real femme fatale: the moves she could make inside of that little striped dress. Dutchman doesn’t get as much attention as it did fifty years ago but it’s a thematically powerful drama and well worth watching.

On a second note: I didn’t move from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey because of Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones) but it’s a nice thought.

What were some of those other films? Do you remember more?

  • Electroglide In Blue
  • Zabriskie Point
  • Easy Rider
  • Knife In the Water
  • Medium Cool
  • Woman In the Dunes
  • David and Lisa
  • Z
  • Hud
  • Blowup
  • Zorba the Greek.
