Groupthink

I was pondering the application of what has been termed “groupthink” to various disastrous events in history—the Bay of Pigs, the Iraq War, the Titanic, the Edsel—and by extrapolating I think I see one real danger for the Republican Party … one which is actually easy to rectify. I’m speaking of Grover Norquist’s Pledge which all Republicans have taken insisting that, under no circumstances, will they raise taxes on the Federal and even on the State level.

This pledge is a fine example of groupthink and it is leading to a disaster.

First, anyone taking a pledge to an individual who is totally outside of the government is clearly accepting a treasonous position. Our elected government is pledged to the support of the people and the Constitution of the United States. If, as it certainly appears, a government representative takes a pledge that overrules his governmental responsibilities, that representative is failing to uphold the Constitution and is by definition showing loyalty to someone outside of the government and therefore is committing what is defined as a disloyal, treasonous act.

When does “We the people” mean Grover Norquist?

Without GOP, Unemployment Would be Under 6%

I found this clear analysis of the jobs situation on Alternet where you can read the complete article

The GOP has been on an economic wrecking mission ever since the election of Barack Obama – indeed we now know that leading Republican strategists and legislators met and planned a course of economic sabotage and complete obstruction on Obama’s very first day in office.

This obstruction has had a huge price – a deliberate price that the GOP is betting the American people will blame on President Obama. GOP obstruction did not prevent the passage of ARRA – the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – popularly know as “The Stimulus” bill of 2009 during the height of the economic disaster as the economy was falling off a cliff – the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that ARRA has saved up to 3 million jobs. But nearly every economic measure since then has been blocked by GOP obstruction, filibusters and brinksmanship.

What has been the result of GOP obstruction?

It is hard to quantify what constant obstruction has cost – you could tally up estimates of every measure that came along, but not all would have passed – nor even been introduced if previous measures had been adopted that obviated their need. But we can look at just two big examples and get a minimal measure of the human cost to American citizens of a deliberate policy to destroy the economy in order to bring down the president; 1) austerity, and 2) obstruction of the 2011 American Jobs Act. Taking just those into account, the unemployment rate would be under 6% were it not for deliberate GOP wrecking.

It has been asked whether this might constitute a treasonous act on the part of the GOP. I don’t think, legally, that it does; however, it is without a doubt treason. Here’s a simple definition of treason from the internet:

trea·son   [tree-zuhn]
noun

  1. the offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign.
  2. a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state.
  3. the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.

Sounds a lot like the activities the GOP is involved in, especially the second and third entries. Does the GOP demonstrate an allegiance to President Obama and to the United States of America or do they demonstrate an allegiance to party, ideology, prevarication, and Grover Norquist?
